Thank you for visiting Joyful Acres Bulldogges
Joyful Acres owns and produces some of the finest Olde English Bulldogges in the world. By finest I mean temperament, health and looks. Over the years those are the three foundations we have bred our dogs upon. Our dogs come from some of the best bloodlines in the nation. Here at Joyful Acres we are consistently improving on the dogs that we have. Joyful Acres has spared no expense to get to where we are and we continually strive to be the best by re-investing in our breeding program. We strive to produce better dogs, every single year. We work very closely with our Veternarians, Dr. Ken McDonough and Dr. Jerry Steinbronn, the health of our adult dogges and puppies are of the utmost importance.
Our dogges are all raised by our family and we sell primarily to families. We treat our customers, as we would like to be treated, plain and simple. Our name is very important to us and we stand by what we say. We have been involved with bulldogges for some time. We are active in the show arena and our daughter is enjoying learning to show in the ring. Our desire is to breed to the standard set forth by the world's premier Olde English Bulldogge registry, the IOEBA. Shawn has judged a number of IOEBA sanctioned dog shows and just this year attained the title of Sanctioned IOEBA- Senior Judge.
Olde English Bulldogge History
The Olde English Bulldogge originated in England between 1600 and 1700. These were the early ancestors to many of the Bull breeds that exist today including the English Bulldog and the American Bulldog. They were bred to participate in blood sports like bull baiting. This so called sport, became quite popular in England through out the middle of the 18th Century. Bull baiting primarily consisted of staking out a bull and allowing several Bulldogges to attack it. A dog of great courage and agility was needed for bull baiting. This dog was of medium size; larger dogs were considered to be the result of mastiff crosses.

Around 1835, laws were passed in England prohibiting bull baiting and the Olde English Bulldogges main purpose of existence vanished. Within a decade the numbers of bulldogs declined drastically almost to extinction. Dog show fanciers eventually decided to reconstruct the breed, but wanted to tone down the aggressive temperament of the original Olde English Bulldogge. They crossed the remnants of the existing stock with the pug and over the years that followed they developed the modern English Bulldog. Unfortunately though, this modern dog is wrought with all kinds of genetic health problems.
The modern Olde English Bulldogge is a reconstruction of the original Olde Bulldogge of the 17th and 18th century. Various genetic crosses have been used in carefully and thoughtfully planned breeding programs to obtain this goal. The foundation of most of today's Olde English Bulldogges can be traced to English Bulldog, American Bulldog, APBT and Mastiff. These dogs were used very selectively in various combinations to obtain the desired physical and mental traits of the original Olde English Bulldogge.
The result has been a good looking Bulldogge of great athletic ability that is much healthier and physically fit without most or all of the problems that plague today's modern English Bulldogs. The goal of all Olde English Bulldogge breeders should be to produce genetically healthier Bulldogges that are free breathers, free breeders, and free whelpers.
Bulldogge Breeders
Being a successful bulldogge breeder in today's marketplace requires a special vision, it requires dedication and knowledge, it requires forethought and the ability to make breeding program decisions, at the spur of the moment. Many of these very important attributes cannot be obtained solely with money or with a couple litters out of dogs produced by someone else. We have been working with our Olde English Bulldogge program for a number of years. We got our first bulldog in 1998. We continue to learn new things, every litter that we have. We have done many different types of breedings with many different bloodlines out there today. We have experienced alot, much of which most kennels have only read about. Some of these things involve in-breedings, line-breedings and outcrosses. We have experience with producing colors in our bullies, like chocolates, blues, blacks, tri-colors and some other exotic and beautiful colors. Much of what we have learned, we have learned by physically doing it and finding out ourselves. This has given us the unique position to gain knowledge about many breeding practices, through first hand experience.
It has been said before that "good things are seldom cheap and cheap things are seldom good". We have invested alot of time, money, sweat and tears into our breeding program, making it what it is today. We have spared no expense assembling together the top of the line, highest quality dogs available today. We do not produce "cheap" dogs and we do not "settle" for second best.
Where is my puppy coming from?
I feel it is important to tell you a little about our family and the environment where your puppy is being raised. Bethany is a Registered Nurse with a BSN, specializing in Intensive Care and heart patients. Shawn has been a Police Officer, for a city here in Iowa, for about ten years now. We have four children and we live out in the country on an acreage, we own a bit of land. We love the outdoors and we love animals, as a family, we enjoy camping, riding our horses and spending time at home. Our children are the biggest priority in our lives and everything we do, we do, with them in mind. We feel that the Good Lord has blessed us with the children we have and they are very involved in our kennel, from playing with puppies, helping with chores to taking pictures.
It is these family oriented principles that also govern our kennel, our rules, our policies and the dogs that we have. We do not have any people aggressive dogs at our house. We do not have any dogs, that our children cannot be trusted with. We have, over the years, selectively bred, held back and gotten rid of specific dogs that did not meet or did meet our qualifications. We stand behind our dogs. If there is a problem, we will take care of it. One must remember that we are dealing with living and breathing animals and regardless of how careful and diligent we are, as breeders, sometimes problems can arise. We want you to know that if that happens, we will take care of you and the problem. We understand that purchasing one of our pups is a big investment for a family, we appreciate your business and will not take it for granted.
We always offer discounts to previous customers, active and retired public safety and military personnel. Ask us about the discounts available.
Joyful Acres Website
Throughout this website you will see photographs of our dogs. Shawn has had the opportunity in his job to become a CSI and because of this he has professional training with digital photography. This has helped us to get accurate photos of our dogs. We take good, clean and accurate photos, we have some amazing dogs and we want you to see, what we see!
We take alot of photos, so that you can clearly see what you are buying and you can accurately make a decision. Many websites you will look at have terrible pictures, aweful photos that do not represent the dogs. Or they only have one or two pictures. That type of kennel expects you to pay your hard earned money for one of their dogs, but they are not willing to get you the pictures you need to make an informed decision. I encourage you not to settle for that. Go somewhere where you will be provided the best quality photos of the parents and the puppies, to base your decision on.
We feel that we are breeding and producing some of the finest bullies out there. Don't just take our word for it. We prove it by what you see in front of you and the customers that come back. Take some time to look closely at Joyful Acres Bulldogges and you will notice something not often seen. Joyful Acres takes good photographs that truthfully and accurately represent the dogs in front of you. Our photos are large enough in size for you to see what our Bulldogges really look like. We believe that it is important for you to make your decision with the best information, both honest and accurate.
It is certainly true that pictures don't make the dog, but if you don't have good clear pictures you cannot get an accurate representation of the quality that you are looking at. For this reason we generally will let the pictures do the talking.
Maybe you have talked to this breeder, the Used Car Salesman- breeder. He can talk your leg off, he'll talk all day long... This is the type of guy that can talk you into buying....just about anything. Be wary of the big talkers. Ask how much experience they actually have with bulldogges? Are they experts after having a couple litters? Have they only been around for a couple years? Have they been involved in showing? Have they aspired to be involved in judging? How is it that they know so much and how can they have so much experience, when in reality they actually have not done much at all?
After all the talk, after all the sales ploys....at the end of the day make him show you what he has. Let the dogs do the talking, not the salesman. Tell him you want to see what he has. Again, look the pictures over carefully with a discriminating eye, and then compare them to the bulldogges that Joyful Acres has bred, owned and produced. Take some time to carefully examine all of our dogs on the website. Look closely at the parents of your puppy, that will give you an idea of what your puppy will look like. We have done our best to represent each dog accurately to you. Take a look at our Breedings page or our Puppies page. For many breeders, the decision to breed two dogs is based on the necessity to produce a litter, lack of any other stud available or a number of other reasons having little to do with a vision of years down the road.
The breedings conducted here at Joyful Acres are done with the future in mind. We aim for consistency and we have goals and objectives to our breedings. We are working with a number of different bloodlines in our kennel, among these are Sullivan, What-a-Mug, some Gargoyle blood, some Victorian and our own bloodline; Joyful Acres. We understand and appreciate all of the hard work that the breeders before us have done. We do not haphazardly put dogs together to produce pups. We never settle for the 2nd best in a breeding. We have some incredible breedings coming up and our goal is to improve every year, which has been our goal since the begining.
How do I choose my puppy?
First, let me start by saying the obvious disadvantage is not being able to handle the puppies in person and to see them in person. With that said, let’s focus on the advantages of an internet purchase of your puppy from Joyful Acres. When responding to an advertisement of puppies for sale in the local paper, how many puppies are you likely to look at in person before someone in the family selects a puppy, generally, not many. But yet over the internet you are able to take your time and look at hundreds, of puppies for sale to find exactly the right puppy. The first thing you want to do in selecting your Bulldogge puppy is to look very closely at the Mother and the Father. Look at their features closely. Generally, the pups will take on the characteristics of the Dam and the Stud Bulldogge. So if you like the parents, chances are you will be happy with the Puppy. For the more advanced buyer, the pedigree is going to come into play when deciding on a Pup.
We live in a very special time. The advantages of modern technology are many when looking for bulldogge puppies for sale. Two items that play an important role in selecting your bulldogge pup is the internet and a digital camera. With the internet you can search for the right puppy until you are completely satisfied. The beauty of having a digital camera is there's no reason why the puppy being featured over the internet cannot have multiple pictures taken. Think about how easy it is to go outside, take a few pictures, download them to a computer and then upload them to a web page. If photos of the bulldogge pups you are looking at seem to be lacking, ask yourself why.
An important concern when selecting your puppy is the pup’s temperament. If you are looking for a Bulldogge that is going to be aggressive, you will not find it here. As I mentioned, our Bulldogges are raised by the family, for the family. Joyful Acres' Bulldogges have been carefully chosen and bred with temperament in mind. Joyful Acres does not own or breed Bulldogges that are aggressive by nature. That being said, these are "Bulldogs" and we have all heard of the "Bulldog Tenacity". It takes a strong but gentle hand to raise these pups and we always recommend Obedience Training as a puppy, from a Professional, if you can swing it.
I feel honesty is of the utmost importance. I will tell you upfront that our pups are not cheap. They are expensive, they cost alot of money. Are they all the same price? No, some are less expensive than others', some are more expensive than others'. Quality is expensive, you are not purchasing from a fly by the night kennel, with no or very little experience and bargain purchased dogs. You are buying from the best in the business and we will treat you right.
Alot of credit goes to Willie Sullivan of Sullivan Bulldogges. Our primary foundation bully, The Mighty Capone, comes from Sullivan Bulldogges and we cannot say enough about the quality of his line of dogs.
I am always happy to speak to you about any concerns you might have. If I cannot answer right away, leave a message, I will call you back as soon as possible.
